MYSTERY

BEARTOWN  CONSTABLE
NEEDS HELP

The Beartown Constable has been kidnapped and finds himself in a small cabin with four walls.  Each wall has a window and all the windows face south.  The Constable sees a bear outside one of the windows.
What color is the bear?

FISHING MYSTERY

One spring day two fathers and two sons went fishing at their favorite pond.  They fished and talked all morning and by noon everyone had caught one fish.  As the two fathers and two sons walked back home, everyone was happy because each had a fish even though only three fish had been caught.
Two fathers and two sons.  Only three fish and no fish were lost.
HOW CAN THIS HAVE HAPPENED?

Check the next issue of Beartown News for the answers.

FROM LAST MONTH

BEARTOWN  ARTIST  DIES

"My name is Gary Thomas," said the voice on the phone. "I'm a friend of Art Roberts.  There's been a horrible accident at his studio!"
Eighteen minutes later, the Beartown Constable was looking at a body on the floor in front of an easel, next to a huge puddle of bright red paint.  Over Robert's right temple was a gruesome, bloody wound.
The Constable noted the victim's immaculate clothing: powder blue sport coat, elegant maroon tie, snow-white shirt, light gray slacks, and tan shoes -- even the soles were spotless.  An unfinished colored still life is sitting on the easel.
Gary Thomas begins,
"I hadn't seen Art for several months, since just before he got married.  I'll tell you about this now, since you're sure to find out about it anyway.  The girl he married used to be engaged to me.  There was some bad feeling between Art and me, but it has all been forgotten."
"Suppose you tell me how this happened." asked the Constable.
"I had a sudden impulse today to pay Art a surprise visit, to let him know I didn't bear any grudges.  When I came into the studio, he was painting, his back to me.  I guess he didn't hear me come in and when I spoke, I must have really startled him.  He dropped the paint on the floor, and as he turned around quickly, he accidentally stepped into the paint, slipped, and hit his head on the corner of the easel!  The blow, combined with the fact he had a weak heart, must've done him in.  I called you as soon as I got over my shock.  I only wonder how Carol will feel when she hears the story?"
"Story is right!" said the Beartown Constable, "Why don't you tell me what really happened?"

Why did the Beartown Constable question Gary Thomas's story?

DO YOU KNOW?

ANSWER:  If Art Roberts had stepped in and slipped in the red paint, as Gary Thomas claimed, some of the paint would have at least been on the soles of his shoes.  But they were spotless.  Also, it's very unlikely that an artist who was working with paint would have been dressed up the way Art Roberts was.

If you fully spell out numbers, how far do you have to go before you use the letter a?

ANSWER:  One thousand.
