MYSTERY

Dorothy, Jean, Virginia, Bill, Jim, and Tom are six young Beartowntonian adults who have been close friends since their childhood.  They went through high school and college together, and when they finally paired off and became engaged a triple engagement party was in order.  They decided to break the news to their friends in a very unusual manner and selected the following scheme.

Early in the party everyone was given a card containing the following cryptic information:

Who now are six will soon become three,
And happily we con fess it,
But how we've chosen you may know
No sooner than you guess it.

Tom, who is older than Jim, is Dorothy's brother.
Virginia is the oldest girl.
The total age of each couple-to-be is the same although no two of us are the same age.
Jim and Jean are together as old as Bill and Dorothy.

What three engagements were announced at the party?

Check the next issue of Beartown News for the answer.

FROM LAST MONTH

HOW COLD WAS IT?

The Beartown Constable had neglected to enter the temperatures in his log book for the past 5 days so he called the local weatherman and asked what the temperature had been at noon for the past 5 days.
"I don't remember exactly," said the meteorologist, "but I do know that the temperature was different each day, and that the product of the temperatures is 12."
Assuming that the temperatures are expressed to the nearest degree, can you help the Constable figure out what the five temperatures were?

SOLUTION: The five temperatures were 1, -1, 2, -2, and 3.
