MYSTERY

HOW COLD WAS IT?

The Beartown Constable had neglected to enter the temperatures in his log book for the past 5 days so he called the local weatherman and asked what the temperature had been at noon for the past 5 days.
"I don't remember exactly," said the meteorologist, "but I do know that the temperature was different each day, and that the product of the temperatures is 12."
Assuming that the temperatures are expressed to the nearest degree, can you help the Constable figure out what the five temperatures were?

Check the next issue of Beartown News for the answer.

 FROM LAST MONTH

The Beartown Constable was told that there is only one number between 2 and 200,000,000,000,000 which is a perfect square, cube, and fifth power, and has decided to look for it.  So far he has checked out every number up to about 100,000 and is beginning to get somewhat discouraged.  CAN YOU HELP HIM FIND THE ANSWER???

SOLUTION:  A number which is a square, cube, and fifth power must also be a 2 x 3 x 5 = 30th power.  3 to the 30th power is somewhat greater than two hundred trillion, so the solution must be 2 to the 30th power which is 1,073,741,824.
