AIRPLANE RACE at
BEARTOWN FLY IN
The annual plane race
this year was around a circular course.
"I hope young Charlie Wingspan wins."
said Mabel Bumford.
"Which one is he?"
Asked Ruthie Molden.
"He's the one flying the
plane with a
"Oh yes. By the way how many
planes are in the race this year?"
"A third of the number of planes
in front of him added to three quarters of the number of planes behind
him will give you the answer."
The Beartown Constable was in a nearby building, not able to see the
sky, and overheard the conversation. Being mentally astute he
immediately knew how many planes were in the race.

FROM LAST MONTH
MURDER AT BEARTOWN
The Beartown Constable
was busy watching the 4H calf judging when he got an urgent message to
go to the Merry-go-Round. There was a dead person on board!!!
"I'm the ticket taker on this merry-go-round"
blurted a young man with a
patch on his shirt and cap,
"Being Saturday there was such
a crowd that the ride was almost over before I had collected all the
tickets. This woman was sitting up in one of the chariots
(the chariots go up when the horses go down)
with the strangest look on her
face. When I said 'TICKET PLEASE' she didn't answer and when I
shook her she slumped down in the chariot. I screamed, the ride
was stopped and you were sent for. I got this blood on my hand
when I shook her."
Just then a Doctor from the crowd arrived and pronounced
"The woman was stabbed through the heart and died instantly".
"Did you notice anything about the victim or anyone that might have been
with her?" asked the Beartown Constable.
"Well, she had ridden before, a couple of times, and I saw the man she
was with on the two previous rides. He was six foot, 200 pounds,
and wore western style blue jean shirt and pants with a red baseball
cap. I just happened to see him jump off just before I tried to
collect her ticket."
"The Doctor said the woman died instantly from the stab wound."
contemplated the Constable, "It
seems strange that you can give such a good description of this woman's
companion on two previous rides and then just 'happen' to notice him
jump off. That's about the weakest story of a murder I've ever
heard. You're under arrest for murder."
Do you know how the
Constable knew the Ticket Taker was the murderer?
The ticket taker said he found the woman sitting up in the
middle of the chariot. The Doctor said she had died instantly.
The motion of the merry-go-round would have made it impossible for a
dead body to stay upright in the middle of the chariot. The body
would have slumped over before the ticket taker touched it.
